I've read about this story. To her credit, she was sold in to slavery and subsequently to Hernan Cortes, so her allegiances didn't matter at that point. Who are you gonna side with, the ones who sold you into slavery, or the mysterious foreigners with magic shooting machines that promise you freedom?

Being familiar with La Malinche, in Mexico, being called a "malinchista" is equivalent of a black man being referred to as an Uncle Tom. Basically a race traitor. La Malinche is still reviled by Mexicans because she gave up the booty to Cortez and his cohorts and sold out her "race". I think even hardcore Latinx feminists hate her.

Of course a few things to point out. For one, as pointed out, she was a slave who the Spanish got after defeating her captors. From them she became an asset for being multilingual, not to mention I suspect she used her linguistic skills in other ways, if you catch my drift. Even if we can dismiss her as a thot, I can see where she went from here. Being a slave, she ended up using her sexuality as a means to survival, having a kid with Cortez and marrying another Conquistador and having a daughter. No doubt her kids became part of the first elites in a mixed colonial society. A similar example is Roxelana, an Ukrainian harem slave who went from being Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's concubine to rising to the rank of Sultana.

And another thing. Mexico as we know it didn't exist just like Italy and Germany as countries didn't exist until the 19th century. At least in the center it was the Aztec empire and other tribes, namely the Tlaxcaltecs and the Chichimecs who were basically tributaries. Among other things they provided the Aztecs with human sacrifices. I will go out on a limb and say these tribes viewed each other in the same way the former Yugoslav republics view each other. There's a reason the Tlaxcaltecs got an alliance with the Spanish. The Tlaxcaltecs needed Spanish firepower and the Spanish needed Tlaxcaltec numbers and their dislike for the Aztecs. Because even with their superior weaponry, tactics, and ruthlessbess, there was no way 500 Spanish were going to bring down an empire. So I think Chicano activists in particular are full of shit when they refer to La Malinche as a traitor of something that didn't exist in the first place, plus she was a sexual slave of her native captors.

The end result was the overwhelming extermination of native males. DNA studies of mestizo population in Mesoamerica show that overall only 20-35% of all mestizo males have paternal native ancestry (Y-DNA).

That is a 65-80% extermination rate.
