What are board papers?

Sounds like upper division university classes or classes they need to take for an advanced degree.
They call courses "papers" in Australia, New Zealand, and some others.
American: How many classes are you taking this semester?
Aussie/Kiwi: I'm taking 4 papers.
American: LOLz papers!

I've never heard of that. So why would someone get boring results in board papers due to a girlfriend? They mean bad grades?
