I’m in a weird mood today. Maybe it’s the weather. I just want to share my story.
Backstory:
My mother cheated on my father, filed for divorce. He tried to work things out, not knowing that she was cheating.
He tries to settle out of court to avoid fees and just to try to keep things civil (my sister is in high school, I’m in college at the time). He puts the house of for sale, but the market is garbage. He’s bleeding money in a mortgage, so he sells the house under what it’s worth. The whole time, she’s living with the new boyfriend. He tells her she can have whatever she wants from the house, he’ll yardsale the rest. She took just about everything. Things that were clearly his, and if there were two of something, the better option.
She goes off the rails, and tries to take him for everything (which is nothing at this point). Takes more than half of the house, but doesn’t pitch in for the months worth of mortgages. She takes half of the yardsale money. She takes my sister. My dad can’t afford a basement apartment now.
For the longest time while he lived in this basement apartment, he had a dining room table and a single chair in the living room. No food in the house. Becomes a regular at the bar nearby.
Fast forward a couple years. My dad quits his job and takes a lesser paying job, something less stressful and more fulfilling. He seems to be doing better. He even bought a sofa!
Before the plastic comes off the sofa, he’s killed by a stoned driver + an aggressive driver.
I’m in my last semester of university. I become the head of my fathers estate. I plan a funeral.
Less than 24 hours after the funeral, my mother calls my grandfather, demanding money (there’s very little). He just laid his son to rest.
One month later, she posts on social media, how all of her dreams have come true, she’s never been happier. She’s now engaged to the boyfriend.
My dad owed her $x after the divorce. This was placed in an interest accruing fund, being paid out monthly. She was the beneficiary, so she got the money. Since that account wasn’t blatantly described as $x owed per the divorce, she sues the estate, me, for $x. I’ve graduated and moved away for a job. With no time to fly in to fight this in court, I let her know that I’ll give her the money out of court, but she loses me. She, of course, demands the money. She gave half of that money to my sister, who would have received half regardless.
She boasts on social media how she only has one real daughter. I’ve watched her try to scam other family members. I’ve informally removed myself from the family.
Today:
I’m almost five years into my professional career. I’ve done really well, but I’ve been met with a lot of obstacles. I’m finally sick of fighting for something I don’t really have an interest in. So, I’ve realized I care more about helping others than turning the corporate wheel. I’m saying fuck you depression, and I’m quitting soon, plan to start a non profit, and return to school to start my JD.
Thanks for listening :)

Poor kid, though I see a shred of oneitis in his future, he will search for a proper mother figure in a future girlfriend/wife and 10 or so years from that point we will be reading another story about him only he will be in his dad's position and wonder what went wrong.

I think the narrator is female. I'd say there were 2 daughters (including the narrator) in the family but the cheating mother took the younger one since the narrator was already in college. The narrator didn't side with the cheating mother, so the mother more or less disowned her, saying she only has one real daughter (the younger one).
Either way, that's a fucked up situation for anyone to be in.

Jesus Christ! This story makes me sad!
I hope you do better in the future, unentangled with your mom...
