pi-hole / dns server, use cloudflares 1.1.1.1

build a separate firewall /ipfire /pfsense /any linux based is best

build your own vpnand of course use discretion...

edit:

use/learn linux based os's like slackware, gentoo, fedora. You may be surprised how easy it is.

also know that all intel chips have massive security flaws built into them (since late 90's or early 2000's) and maybe even support and use the the free software foundation and learn about what Richard Stallman can say.

there's a limit/point on when it gets ridiculous but imo all these things should've been built into all os's, and pcs but dark forces are always doing the worst shit.

I don't do all the stuff I list most of the time but I have built it all, and learned enough to help ppl who are pro-privacy.

while I have used mint and liked it, I would never use ubuntu (mostly due to proprietary programs that cannot be authenticated). Also, it's way too heavy. It's not a safe os. Also, as you say, same thing with VPN's that you yourself don't build. If you pay, you're still not in control. Never use a free one.

I would highly recommend to get a few raspberry pi's for the pi-hole and firewall, or an old pc for the firewall.

it's so easy these days. I actually used a 8yo pc to setup a pfsense firewall in a few hours, and while it does require a bit of setup and yearly maintenance (sometimes) they can run for years without any problem. I keep mine on a block of wood, so it's off the floor and dust it out every 6months. I tried ipfire too, and it's even easier. If you want to learn iptables, thats great too.

I should include to use a UPS for the modem/dns server/ firewall (which even a cheap UPS will keep your internet on for hours b/c of such low voltage and no monitors needed in case of a power surge. This is the largest reason any linux system goes down. So, if you have a steady power source, a system can stay up for years.

One thing I love about it is they never need to be rebooted. I can recompile the kernel while its running, start/stop/restart any service or deamons. Can't do that in winblows.

btw, I use the 2nd gen raspberry for pi-hole and got a case+tiny fan and it's been running non-stop, no problems. The pf-sense firewall has had some issues but after I worked them out, it's been fine. If you have old hard drives, which make a lot of noise, they may be failing and need to be replaced in mission critical scenarios. HD cloners are cheap, and I highly recommend the Toshiba single platter (1tb) hdds for less noise, no head-seeking, and longevity.
