Of course slave owners will be pissed when slaves walk off the plantation, even if its for the slaves' well-being and self preservation.

Just like a slave owner and their slaves, society doesn't care about you. It cares about what you can provide.

And when you refuse to provide, they will say and do whatever it takes to bring you back to the plantation... the only place where you have value to them.
