There isn't much going on inside those heads, if anything at all. It's just a matter of efficiency - if everyone were self aware and actualized, life would be complicated, we would have too much individual competition between us. For human hierarchy, there have to be a large number of followers, throughout history it's been a feedback loop where the smarter rise to the top and the IQ/societal benefits trickle down.

The issue is, it is easier than ever to be self aware. There is little to no real danger, unlimited food, very little day to day survival stress. More of us are waking up than ever and we can't easily go up in life, but we also can't be happy with the mindless drones surrounding us.

Women especially are mindless automatons with basic programming. They are great for finding the strongest mate, reproducing and raising children, but it's all instinctual, preprogrammed. This is why it was so easy for some autists to hack the system with the PUA movement - if you look at it objectively it all becomes clear.

The truth of it is, there isn't enough room for as many leaders/self aware people as there are going around. The gap to self awareness/leadership is so large for most that it may as well be impossible. You either live with it as your secret and try to get past the jadedness and disgust or you numb and moderate yourself to tolerate the people around you.

Remember, in the communist revolutions they always cut the heads off the tall poppies. The "leaders" do not like competition and the lower class becoming self aware and revealing the scam. They agitate the NPCs to purge anyone who is "different" to 1. get people to shut up and fall in line and 2. Permanently remove the person and their intelligent self awareness DNA from the gene pool.
