If it was an even split of labour / income during a marriage between a man and a woman, I could understand an even split of the assets afterwards. On the other hand, if you paid the wife for services rendered, ie gave her a babysitter's or maid's hourly rate for 7 days a week, then subtracted rent, utilities, groceries and the occasional handyman duties the man performs, they'd be lucky if they didn't owe the husband a small fortune after the divorce.

In the vast majority of cases for women living in big cities, rent / mortgage is going to cost a lot more than vacuuming occasionally and dropping the kids off at school.
