Do you even know your great grandfather's name or his father's? I don't think so, you just don't know them. Also, there are many great men in history that schools don't teach you about them and you are totally oblivious.

You wanting to "leave something behind" is like saying "I want to accomplish something, and if I'm gonna die anyway, I want to at least fulfill my biological role of passing down my DNA to my kids".

The key word is "to accomplish something" aka "You don't want to die with regret". When you lay down on your bed trying to sleep, can you tell yourself "Today, I have done my best, I owe nothing, I have no regret"? Can you say it to yourself and feel satisfied?

We can only experience the now, and do everything right now, not the previous now or the incoming now. Your satisfaction comes from doing something that you take pride in doing it or feel happy doing it. When you are on your death bed, you will rethink some of what you have done. Even if you have a kid but you have way more regrets and wishing you'd done something while you were healthy. You'd die a miserable man.

It's OK if you want children, but your self actualization must take place above all else because it will give the greatest satisfaction when you are dying.

Sometime during the next 100 years (and most of them much sooner) they will ALL -- including your "special snowflake" ass -- be dead.

And by ~100 to ~200 years from now they virtually ALL -- 99.999999+% of them, even the most rich or accomplished or "famous/popular" during their own lifetimes -- will be entirely forgotten...

The handful that are "remembered" will mostly only be so as a "name" (probably not even spelled correctly) connected with assorted BS that, as time goes on, will end up being a sort of cartoonish "caricature" version that has little (if anything) to do with the reality of the life they lived, the work they did.

IOW, get over yourself already.

It is almost a certainty that EVERYONE living right now will be forgotten within the next 100 years, and so will the people living 100 years from now, and so on and so forth.

Stop believing in this “I gotta leave muh legacy” bullshit that is romanticised by hollywood.

YOU are your own legacy, and it is up to YOU to do everything you want to do while you’re still alive so that you won’t lie on your death bed 70 years from now thinking “i should have done so and so”

Focus on yourself and your goals, focus on improving your health, wealth, fitness, education, career, etc.

so that when you’re 90 and about to kick the bucket, you can think to yourself “fuck legacies. I lived a fulfilling life FOR MYSELF, BY MYSELF, and i’m satisfied”
