So I'm dealing with an emotionally abusive mother and wanted some advice on how to deal with it.
I'm still living at home, about to graduate college, and over time I've seen that it's basically impossible to prosecute a woman for abuse. Unless a man is bleeding out on the floor with stab wounds then MAYBE the police or court system will give a shit. But that's not definitive either. Regardless, my mother has been steadily ramping up her abusive practices over the years and the worst of times always come when she's pissed off about something and the men in our house pay the price.
Like I said, it's purely emotional abuse and when I asked my therapist about what i could do to prosecute, my shrink basically said "It's basically impossible, don't even try it." I could be labeled a head case if it was just me, but my younger brother has some lingering shit going on with him and even he agrees with me that our mother is an abuser but we can't do shit.
Gaslighting, blaming everything on others, denying our own memories are true, twisting every accusation or grievance into an argument against us, pretending to care about our career choices, turning minor mistakes into angry lectures. You get the idea. Hell, she even does the stereotypical "Abusive Dad" thing where she gets home, pops open a beer, and starts ordering the kids around.
I'm not asking for pity. I'm just asking what I should do to weather the storm and how I can use this history of abuse to better myself.
