You have to do 20 to retire not 5. They are not called mercenaries anymore they are call private military contractors. (example - Black Water- not called that anymore) First focus on getting into the army then focus on becoming a ranger then do your time. Private contractors hire all types of people but the ones that make the money are know as Tier 1 assets. (Seals, SAS, Intelligence personnel, Pilots, Astronauts, ect... (Yes I said astronaut's) You need to have a plan B if you don't make the "cut" for ranger. This happens all the time. Pick something in the Army that has real world application such as operations or aviation (helicopter mechanic) something as a plan B. That's a start! (Drones Drones Drones 😵 everybody's got them now)

Depends on what you are after, and who you are.

Do you have strong family ties? Do you fear death?

Though I was military, I will always regret not taking the steps to be a mercenary myself.

The notion of being a warrior / fighter for money seems quite endearing. But I speak from the greatest of ignorance. Do try to find real mercenaries, they will give you the nitty-gritty.

Well if you aren't a psychopath and mangina snake, the corporate world is not for you as a man... You won't be able to suck dick to the top so you'd have to be a fucking mangina snake. If I had to choose, I would choose the mercenary path. But don't expect to be a Ranger. Not all men are mentally and physically capable of becoming one and there is nothing they can do about it. They are called Rangers for a reason instead of just infantry. But you don't have to be a Ranger to become a mercenary later on.

Its not easy to become a mercanery. Most of the modern private military companies dont do mercanery work (fighting in war), they do more security related stuff.

The real mercs are under the radar and you will need very good connections to get in.

Try to get as much qualifications as possible. A combat medic is always needed for example.

Also if you can, go to the SF (Green Berets) and not to Rangers.

If you have the option to go to the US Army, dont go to the Foreign Legion. The pay is low and the Legion is not the same l, as it was in its hey day.

Joining the army academy is one thing but being able to make it and pass the ranger course is something else. The school takes in hundreds of solders each year but only a few walk down the isle and graduate. I’ve spent 8 years in the army myself and I’ve known a few that went to rip and passed but failed one of the courses. It’s a tuff school to pass.

Here’s the thing and he’s coming for somebody with over 18 years experience in the military. It’s gonna depend a lot on where you are right now in school, and most importantly your medical history and any law violations. Because to have a job as an operator you’re going to need a secret security clearance at least and that means you’ve got I have a squeaky clean background, that also means that just because a judge tells you something is expunged doesn’t mean jack with the way the military does background checks nowadays.

Your medical health is important because you’re gonna have to go through MEPS (military entrance processing station) And they’re going to give you the most thorough detailed physical of your life but even the slightest thing they lose their shit over so you’d be wise if you’ve had surgeries or anything like that to start gathering up documentation on it right now.

If it’s something you want to do you need to start training and conditioning your body right now. If you go in the Navy routes and you’re pursuing something like SEAL, that means BUDS and the boats on heads torture/conditioning weeds out more guys than you can imagine. The army route you may get an 18X (Special forces option). Dad again you’ve got to be ready because you’re gonna go to basic training, AIT, airborne school, Ranger school, SFRE (special forces readiness evaluation) Q Course then, specialize in your MOS for SF. Way to put that looking about two years of just training and getting the shit kicked out of you every day. If you break something you’re done, that goes for the Navy side too. If you quit or have disciplinary actions you’re done. A lot of people don’t get second chances to go back unless you’re a female in which case they’ll give you I think it was 11 tries then first female ranger got.

Here is the downside, if you fail the course for any reason you will have to still serve out the duration of your contract so if you joined 18X option you’ll more than likely wind up as 11B (infantry). I’m not sure how the Navy does it but from what I was told a while back, you go where the needs of the Navy are, but a recruiter can clarify that for you.

Of course you can still just join Army as an 11B with a Ranger option what you’re gonna have to be one hell of an impressive candidate. That’s totally doable thousands have before and thousands more will. Just understand it’s not walk in the park. They don’t give a damn how much weight you could rack up on the bench press one rep, they care about endurance and how many reps can you do 200 pounds. But if you start training now, being healthy and take care of yourself, you could get through it.

Either way those mercenary companies are going to be looking for you or you can seek them out and apply online. My recommendation take the contract that gives you the best job with the least amount of time served. Yeah they may throw bonus money at you but trust me it’s not worth it and once they’ve taken taxes you are left with minuscule payments. If you like what you’re doing you could always reenlist but you don’t wanna be stuck in some crap job that you don’t like for years.

I personally think going into the military is a great thing because you’re gonna learn a lot more there about life, how to interact and deal with other people, how to show proper respect and courtesy, and how to follow a very detailed time schedule. Those are things you don’t learn in college and I would take any person that could walk up to an individual shake their hand and look them in the eye to talk, than a college grad who can’t hold a conversation unless it’s through text and emoji any day of the week.
