I've been wanting to adopt a cat (preferably) or a dog, but being how I live alone, what if I get in an accident or something - how am I supposed to make sure someone checks up on my pet? I guess agreements with neighbors? Also, I had pets in childhood, and I remember we had to discipline them to learn to behave, and I'm really averse now to punishing animals just because they want to behave naturally.
Is anyone single with a pet?

A dog requires more room and maintenance than a cat. If you live alone, it is best you get a cat and keep him/her indoor 100%. Outdoor cats live short lives due to environmental hazards, disease, cars, and vicious dogs in the neighborhood. For the very unlikely event of accident resulting in you seriously hurt or killed, carry a note in your wallet and instruct law enforcement to contact your family or any willing party to take care of your cat. Your local animal shelter may have a program to take care of and adopt out your cat in exchange for a bequest upon your death.
As far as misbehavior of your pet, never hit him/her. Instead use positive reinforcement to change unwanted behavior. Google the Web for further info.

No, no, not at all. Cats do perfectly fine indoor. They just want to eat and sleep all day. Make sure you have a large window for your cat to look out of. This idea of roaming free is a human idea; cats know nothing of it or care.
