Not quite 30 but I'll answer your question with my experience. Hopefully it'll give some insight.

I'm currently out and failing to get ahead on my own. Not because of any type of handicap or anything, but being a civvie comes easy for some as they transition. It's been an uphill battle for me since late 2013 when I went Natl guard. Such is life, especially when you go infantry and the only real skill set you have on paper is knowledge of the many ways to end another human life. The civilian world doesn't have much of a place for someone like that.

Honestly, I'm considering going back. The grass is always greener on the other side, they say. They're not wrong; I honestly thought the only thing left for me was to get married, have kids, and fade into Oblivion either naturally, or in a crisis that required my sacrifice to save others. That's such bullshit.

Fuck that, I've said. At this point, I'm quitting smoking so I can detox, and going for runs every morning as if it was PT routines that are going out of style. I won't be going back to infantry (mostly because the amount of training you end up doing is far less than that of other units) and am considering 88M where I can get my Class A drivers license (should have it already, I've operated a Bradley IFV for several years after all.) Plus, I'd rather be in a unit in Garrison where it's basically an 8-5 gig where I occasionally get a mission to run logistical packages out to units in the field doing their training.

If I get to fire my rifle during those training events, that's a huge bonus. That's the one time I can let all the rage out on a paper target, and no one actually had to get hurt; best damn feeling in the world, short of actually killing something. I've never had any issue with walking up to someone who was hiding behind cover waiting for something to happen, and demanding 2 of their 4 mags of ammo. I'll make better use of them charging as a madman than they will ducking behind cover.

Even more important on selling me on the idea of going back, you're guaranteed free chow at the DFAC, a bed and some space in the barracks, and if you're in a non combat unit, life is made. Considering getting me a sex doll and keeping it in my barracks room closet. I'm not even afraid of what my COC will ask when they come by doing room inspections.

The TL;DR would be: former infantry, got out in 2013. Fucking hate the civilian world, and women even more than that. Serving a full 20 is a much better sounding deal than serving life as a slave for some skank. Plus there's a chance you'll get to let some RPR out on some sorry sucker that happens to end up in your crosshairs.

Edit: COC is for Chain Of Command, for those who may be curious. Also, a sex doll in the closet might be a good way to pass room inspections. One look at it, and they may just leave without inspecting the rest of the place for fear they may stumble upon a sex dungeon within your bathroom. Also not afraid of judgment there either; a bored and horny soldier is 50 times more likely to go postal at the range than one with post nut clarity. I've noticed the IFF module in my brain functions better and identifies enemies more accurately when I'm not blinded by testosterone-induced rage. That's a little idea for you SM's reading this looking for ways to improve your career in the service. Have fun, gents.
