I think it is a great idea. Gas companies are desperate for welders. I know a kid less than 22, got the proper certifications, and now lives in 5th wheel across the country. By the way... he averaged 300k last year. It is a hard, dirty occupation, but if you save your money you would be set for life before 35 easy. Marry or have kids and all bets are off.

If its available to you, I recommend getting your underwater welding certificate. The job is demanding and dangerous but the money you'll make is damn good. Working on an oil platform, you could make as much as $120 an hour. However, even if you choose regular welding you'll still have a good paying skill you can use anywhere in the world.
