He probably thought she wouldn't actually kill her own children and was just upset... and didn't want to involve the cops unnecessarily. He underestimated how crazy she was (like most men).

See? When it comes right down to it, men are still held responsible for women's actions. Would you want to be responsible for a child's behavior that you are not allowed any control over?

On a related note, isn't it interesting how all it takes to push a woman to commit homicide against children is to leave her with the responsibility of staying home to take care of them that night rather than her getting to go out and "get lit at somebody's haunted house"?
