tl;dr at bottom

Twelve years ago, she and I went out for drinks. Graduated a year apart in high school, hadn't seen one another for six or seven years. Seemed to be a good time, talked a few times after, but apparently me offering to buy her a t-shirt from a music concert I was at was contrued as "Coming on too strong". I can see where she was coming from, so fair enough.

Fast forward to present day (Me-36M, Her-38F), and I receive a FB message out of the blue from her, apologizing for how she acted. I accepted, told her it wasn't a big deal, and was going to leave it at that.

I've been bettering myself over the years incrementally, especially since that long time ago. I earned my EMT License, was an Infantry Drill Sergeant and completed thirteen years of honorable service (No ART-15, Court Martials, yada yada), and am going back to college to enter the Nursing Program, as I've been working as a Tech in the E.R for the last five years. Upwards and onwards, right?

I've also recently ended a destructive drinking habit (almost two months sober after nigh on twenty years of drinking), and have been hitting the gym everyday. Life is looking great, and I feel a thousand times better mentally and physically, then I did two months prior.

I conveyed this to her when she inquired as to how I was doing, and the typical subtle fishing began. She wanted to know where I was living, what I was doing, what shift I worked. Mentioned a horrible divorce between her parents, and I responded with, "Marriages aren't worth it in the long run."

Her response seemed...disappointed. Note that she's also gained a lot of weight (very unhealthy, not just 'obese'. Morbidly might be approaching it.) She's in the same job which she apparently still enjoys, but I don't think is high on the advancement ladder. She lives in the same place she did eleven years ago. Same friends, same...life.

She's not enjoying the popularity that she once did, a decade or more ago. She ended the conversation by asking for me to call her up if I ever wanted to shoot the shit.

Me? I said, "Sure, if I ever find the time."

tl:dr She came back fishing after twelve years, but I had already evolved to crawling on land.
