My ex wife had legal aid, and I didn't (UK).

I spent all my savings and didn't get anywhere trying to remain in my son's life.

Not to sound like an arsehole, but, I lost way more than my life savings trying to fight against a biased system. All the way to the high courts in London. The long term stress of fighting made me lose my mind. Other things like job and health followed.

I know it's tough to zoom out and see your situation from a distance, but ask yourself what you are willing to lose by fighting in the courts.

I don't see it as weakness to give up, and see your child in the future, when you are fit and mentally well. I see it as wise.

I was told to give up by my barrister (good bloke) but I wouldn't listen to him and lost a lot more in the end.

You might also want to contact Richard Cooper - he went through divorce and custody battle in a different province.
