The use of GPG or S/MIME provides a better result than what most of the private email providers achieve. Email is leaky by design as it is federated and designed with full backwards compatibility in mind and requires that you trust every SMTP server in the chain not to rat you out. Therefore, if you want privacy and security for the content of your emails, make sure you encrypt them using client-side tools and then the choice of provider mostly becomes irrelevant, except for when communicating with those who can’t or don’t support said encryption methods.

Other good steps to take are to:

1) Minimise data by deleting messages you’ve read as soon as possible (less will leak then) 2) Find out the email addresses of those you expect to communicate with and block all others 3) View all messages as plain text, not RTF or HTML to avoid unexpected privacy leaks 4) Keep email off your mobile devices, if possible use only one computer to access it 5) Avoid webmail, use dedicated software to access your inbox for better security 6) Minimise the use of email altogether; use modern communication methods instead 7) Avoid making subjects meaningful, keep things vague or just use random identifiers
