This is what i know Usually we advance when we are at war with which other that's why we currently have the technology we do now because in WW1 and 2 the only way of surviving was being more advanced and intelligent that your enemy just look at Germany and France the reason why France was capitulate d by Germany is because the French were still celebrating their victory from WW1 while Germany was advancing for revenge. During the cold war The USA didn't have an interest in space they didn't even have a space organizations but fearing that Russia was building up to space exploration the USA feared of Russia dominating in space and astronomy so in order to stay number 1 they ended up creating NASA and now look at which country basically owns space because of the fear of loosing to its enemy. What I see here is natural selection because France was considered a country not to be messed with before WW1 so it gave them a sense of not needing to improve on anything while Germany was building in order to dominate Europe and during ww2 look how France quickly advance d in such a short time in order to stop Germany even though they still lost But which the current leaders in charge and considering how murderous our current weapons are I think a war would be suicide for everyone.

Reading into it a bit I would say we are teetering on level II with the space force and entering an age where we mine space for minerals. Conspiracies abound have me believing that aliens are already here and will use us to their advantage. The series Lives of Tao doesn't seem too far off at this point

Maybe it's not about power but complexity . The more advanced the more subtle and hidden , if you can host everything you need with less and less you may become invisible to less developed .

A evolution in the right direction may only be likely as a form of a subtle invasion with previous reprogramming, if family was bad and you wanted to split people between working class and reproductive class funded by all the work of others like in a hive, how would you reprogram people ? If we live long enough, and the we contact other civ and we discover that we think and organize in the same way and it was not by chance, don't we surprised.

Maybe earth have two civs, one old anf subtle and another sloppy , the more advanced is mostly hidden and leaves us to our own devices most of the time, there is no competition not conflict. We are Soo primitive that extrapolate that if we burn oil more advanced civs must burn galaxies . I see just the opposite , if we survive earth may appear only habitated by animals and plants and our offspring may only live in a semi material , subtle way. Then another animal becomes sapient and we just would respect their own development unless their started to rock the boat with nuclear weapons , at that moment, what would you do ...?
