Guys, Mill was talking about old style marriage being slavery OF WOMEN. He was an early supporter of woman liberation. Different times, different issues.

lol, just skimmed his wiki and from it we can deduce he is complaining about marriage enslaving women. He got some things right like liberty and freedom of speech but he got other things wrong like his common good/utilitarianism stuff. Also, he lived over 150 years ago when laws were more reasonable between men and women (all the responsibility is on the man but his wife must obey him pretty much, she can leave but will get nothing), laws got unfair quickly after he died. If he saw the laws now he'd probably flip.
