There's no magic to it, and anyone that claims that know what they're talking about is a moron, myself included.

There's not a whole lot to it. Start with regular mutual funds, index funds, or bonds if you like, for example, I buy a lot of government instruments through treasurydirect.gov where you can get inflation protected securities, for as little as $25, and even automatic withdrawals. All of it is free (minus the bond buying part). This is assuming you're in the U.S. of course, although almost all countries have something similar, as all countries have debt instruments.

It also comes with a pseudo bank account you can park money in if you're weird like me. Buy a few bonds, maybe a treasury or something, and there you go, you invested.

Now as to what is "investing properly" that is entirely up to you. Me? I'm a high risk long term international markets person. I wouldn't start with that. Start with index funds, money markets, etc. Skip CDs through a bank, all they do is buy bonds and pay you far less than the government will pay you. Buy your own treasuries. In the U.S., the prime rate is at 5, and the discount rate is at 2.50. Index funds in the market is around 7 on average over long time.

The key to investing is not put all your eggs in one basket, nor having a million baskets, but having a few smart baskets.

Investing is a long term operation. It's invest and forget. "Investing" by definition is investing, and you're invested in your money. You have to have a vested desire to do so.

And ignoring all that, the best investment is in yourself, your health, your education, your welfare, your business goals, etc.

You'll make far more investing in a hotdog cart on the street corner, as you control 100% of what's happening. The market is about as good as a casino.

If the professor doesn't have a net worth over a million bucks, then drop the class. Find someone who has made an ass load of money from the markets and learn from them.

I would NOT ever invest in government bonds!!! ...for many reasons I won't go into...

Thoroughly learn whatever it is you invest in before placing a single penny in that investment. One of the most common mistakes people make about investing is thinking that investing is about making money. It isn't. It's about managing risk. If you think "how much could I lose" as opposed to "how much can I make", then you are on the right track to becoming a successful investor. You do want to consider the return on the investment (ROI), but it is the NOT the primary concern. Managing risk is.

If you can find the (major) tops and bottoms conversely of commodities vs stocks within even 20 %. Biting and holding over 5 year cycles... you will beat inflation by about 150%. Beating inflation is the only real goal. Everything else is Gambling.

Stakes however are getting very high... everyone uses the stick market like a bank now. (Guess what's close to a major low right now )
