saving people; being a hero or whatever...

when i was young? i was told the story of the time my dad was a young kid, walking with "pap pap". pap pap had been a "real honest to goodness cowboy" on the west coast back when such things existed. (my father, now deceased? was born 1920s... this was his grandfather... late 1800s?)

anyways. they cut thru the field at grammas house above it, and the bull "that wasnt supposed to be out" well, he WAS out. Further? he was supposed to be "okay", well... the bull didnt know that? he CHARGED.

pap pap knew how to handle a charging bull, hell, he had been a real cowhand and had a real "gunfighter" rig and everything with 2 pistols. dad said he just YANKED him behind himself, calmly took his big cowboy belt buckle off... wrapped it TIGHT around his big fist? giant cowboy belt buckle for a knucklebuster?

and hauled back and PLOWED the bull in the nose lumbering up on them. blood flew everywhere, the bull backed up, shook his head, and wandered back off. My dad said after THAT? as long as HE was with his young friends? the bull would run away from them when they cut thru the field... he remembered what had happened. LMAO.

I grew up? thinking "holy shit!, how in the FUCK am i expected to do shit like this?" you know? fuck me sideways.

In college? I was walking back to my basement apartment with a young blonde girl i liked, and "the giant mean dog" was where he always was? slobbering mad like usual when anyone cut thru the field... holy shit, this asshole was OFF his perennial giant chain!

I didnt know whether to shot or go blind, but my mind FLASHED to a thing a guy had taught me. I just GRABBED the little blonde girl, yanked her behind me, gruffly said "dont move... i gotta try something..."

i did what my memory remembered i had been told? i bent down and picked up small rocks and dirt. stood up and stared the dog down... he was going nuts, but, holding back...

i had been taught to stare still, but suddenly JUMP!!! in an explosion of motion... the dog was supposed to (usually() bolt and circle back... meaning he was scared...(and i was told? 10% of the time or less? the dog would INSTANTLY attack if it was truly aggressive)

well, the odds were good, the dog JUMPED and ran around... I told her "its okay, hes not aggressive, hes just scared and putting on a show... dont look athim, we WALK slowly, we're fine, just dont act scared..."

my last trick? he started sniffing close as we went past? i threw the rocks in his face! (was told this freaks the dog out, i can attackfrom a far distance... make him more wary...)

this TOO worked!

MAN, i played it off? like i was cool? (inside? i was amazed i didnt shit myself)

what amazed me later? i didnt THINK, i just ACTED. I was LUCKY i had a memory, for being told whatto do, and it popped into my mind under stress.

i suddenly "understood"... i wasnt TRYING to get laid? i wasnt TRYING to be a "hero"? i was just going on instinct, i have a good memory, thank god.

you dont THINK in a situation? you just ACT. It happens all by itself, its instinct. Hells bells, if i had time to think about it? i probably wouold have froze up. Over the years? (i am 50...) i have played this or similar role? several times... each time, it wasnt anything i THOUGHT about, it wasnt anything i planned... "it just happened".

if GOD didnt love the irish as much as he does? I guess i would have been dead any of several times over, LMAO...

I wasnt trying to be a white knight that day, i wasnt trying to get laid... and if i had time to THINK about it? i would have pissed my pants... "it... just... happened..."

like a lot of times in my life? i "reported back to my dad" what had happened? and like usual, my DAD just chuckled...

"you SEE? I told you, when the time comes? you dont think, you just DO, it comes natural..."

MOST of us here? would "instinctively" yank a woman, or a child, behind us in such a moment... without THINKING... it just... "happens".
