It could just be that he is a violent piece of shit.

I mean sure she could have antagonized him, but that isn't an excuse, I get antagonized but I don't go around choking people.

But with all that said, she chose him, he wasn't assigned to her by the state, and most probably he was a violent asshole before they even dated, and she knew it, and probably liked it and thought he'll go around beating random guys and not her.

She admitted this wasn't the first time he has beaten her and she decided to stay with him and have a child with him.
