It's not the "natural functions" that are unclean. It's the actual blood. Blood is treated as a biohazard for a very good reason, you can't just smear it on yourself and proclaim "here, see? I'm fine"

I don’t know anyone who is grossed out by the fact women have periods. Just like nobody is grossed out by the fact people have to pee and poop.
