I recall reading a paper or blog post that looked at the typical masculinity inventories (beginning, if I recall correctly, with BEM, developed in 1974) used in social science research. Over time, these inventories seem to have quietly dropped what might be considered "masculine virtues" (leadership, competence, ambition, confidence) from the list of traits tied to masculinity, and are now almost completely about violence, aggression, sexual conquest and irresponsibility, and control over women.

That is, they have evolved from a mixed bag of positive and negative norms into something that is almost completely negative.
