Speculation is good, as long as we realize that's all it is. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any studies that go beyond the data concerning what you noted above.

It is very hard to determine who wants to actually die and who wants help. You can't ask dead people and alive people who want help are likely to give you the answer that gets them the most help.

One way to sort of measure it is to count self-harm hospitalisations as suicide attempts, but that covers a range of possible motives.

One study I am aware of that puts found roughly even suicide attempts was the Dunedin longitudinal study which is the gold standard for longitudinal studies. They've been following 1000 people since the 70s and studying all kinds of things. They also found that women are more violent than men in relationships.

Another issue is what counts as an attempt. Does going up to the top of a building and standing on the edge for 30 mins and then deciding not to jump count?

You do not have it figured out and I would be very careful with this line of thinking. I certainly wouldn’t share this theory. You could really hurt someone actually suicidal if you told them they were just doing it for attention.

Here’s an example:

When I was 13 I attempted suicide (am female). I drank table polish and was extremely sick for a whole week. But my liver managed to get work through it and I didn’t die. But I did drink enough that I could’ve died.

I’ve never told my family. I’ve only told my closest friends.

I’ve also had many female friends attempt suicide before. They only told me because I’m close to them. No one I know has done it for attention. A cry for help is not the same as attention seeking.

Suicide is generally a very private thing. Of course you’ll see some attention seekers on social media posting about how suicidal they are and pictures of self-harm, but it’s only natural you’ll see these people as they are literally posting it all on social media.

I bet many people around you are suicidal. Many may have even attempted suicide. You don’t know because it’s a private thing.

I knew a girl back in high school. Sweetest girl you’ll ever meet. Always smiling. Always willing to help.

A year ago she died in a murder-suicide because she had been groomed by a mentally unstable pedophile since she was 13. He drove them out to a beach and killed her then himself with a gun.

You’d have never known spending time with her.

You do not have it figured out . This is not a reasonable line of thought as you have literally no evidence other than baseless speculation. Please don’t go around telling people that young girls are only committing suicide for attention. You’re going to seriously get someone killed.
