Everything here was supposed to disappear. Banned subreddits, deleted communities, cancelled blogs — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.

It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

I pay for the servers, the storage and the bandwidth myself. If you want this record still standing in ten years, become one of the people who keeps it online.

These shopping lists of movies are hard to discuss - most people haven't seen most of the films, or it's been so long that they don't remember the details. Is there any interest in a movie club, where we pick out one movie every fortnight to have a focused discussion about?

Some miscellaneous comments on what I remember from the films:

  • I love the Monroe/Russell pairings. It's hard to phrase this without it sounding like a backhanded compliment, but apart from her magnificent figure, Jane Russell is an unlikely Hollywood sex symbol. She comes across as being sensible and stable and comfortable in her own skin, and I guess it makes an interesting contrast with Marilyn.

  • There's an interesting discussion to be had about Van Heflin's role in Shane: the good father and husband who can provide for his family as long as there's law and order, but who finds himself having to cede his leadership to the gunman.

  • The Negulesco Titanic has, if I remember correctly, a shocking scene to do with male disposability.

But when it comes to 1953 movies, we have to talk about Roman Holiday:

  • In the two minute haircut scene, Audrey Hepurn becomes Audrey Hepburn

  • It's a celebration of peace. Less than a decade after tanks rolling through Rome, our heroes are flitting around on Vespas and in microcars, made by engineers who had to find something else to do when they couldn't make fighter planes.

  • It's a celebration of female empowerment without snark or false bravado, empowerment that's inseparable from duty. It's an inverted Cinderella story - okay Audrey, you're a princess, but grow the fuck up and take some responsibility for yourself.

  • It's a celebration of men and women enjoying each others' company, being kind and thoughtful to each other without snark or bitterness.

  • Did I mention that there's no snark in this film? Coming from our era of incessant snark, the contrast is like when you've spent too long walking in the Italian sun and you finally get to sit down in the shade beside a cooling calming fountain and have a glass of beer.
