/u/redblueredblue222 put up this post because he was upset that I told him that if he disagreed with cfroflcopter's stance on testosterone's effects on intelligence then he should refute it some facts.

Cfroflcopter posted an article linking testosterone levels and obesity and labeled it as such, then explained that health and intelligence have a correlation. Redblueredblue222 posted a study linking weight and estrogen and then labeled it as a study linking IQ and estrogen. One of these is a lie.

I'll take my own advice and put this article up. Section V, "Estrogen and Cognition," suggests that redblueredblue222 is incorrect and that increased sex hormone is correlated with increased cognitive function and memory.

Actually, this is the lie.

CFroflcopter posted a discussion linking testosterone and IQ and labeled it as such, and then posted articles linking testosterone and obesity.

As for your own source, please read it a bit more carefully.

From Section V.

there does seem to be some consistent evidence that variations in performance on cognitive tasks known to be sexually dimorphic occur during phases of the cycle characterized by high or by low levels of estrogen. This is in line with the proposition that estrogen facilitates those cognitive skills in which females typically excel.

The only observations that consistently and significantly differ from this are in old post-menopausal women, whom were not the focus of my discussion.

Your source supports my argument. Thanks :)

You directly lied about what your sources said. If you believed rofl's post to be misleading, you were free to address that, but you wanted the whole thread nuked. He labeled his links for what they were, though, and you specifically said a link discussed something that it did not.

Also:

One possible conclusion from the extant literature on the menstrual cycle is that although minor fluctuations in some cognitive abilities occur simultaneously with fluctuations in ovarian hormones during different menstrual cycle phases, levels of sex hormones are sufficient at all times to maintain cognitive functions in women of reproductive age.

This indicates a positive correlation between sex hormones and cognitive function. My point with this was that it took me about a minute of googling to find something that supported me and demonstrated why I disagreed with you. You had an entire morning to fight with me about having his post deleted, but not a minute to find some proof to support your position.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. I have no reason to believe one of you over the other, so if you want my support, prove your position.

So you keep going back to your source which says hormones correlate to intellect. And again, that is what I said. Low estrogen = stupid is my argument.

I'm not sure you read my argument before deciding to disagree with it.

And ROFL directly lied about his sources. He went "IQ is linked to testosterone. Loom at this study!" Then linked some obesity study.

There's a serious contradiction in your hypothesis. If low estrogen levels lead to lower levels of attractiveness, then surely it would lead to lower birth rates (either in or out of wedlock).

[–]redblueredblue222[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's not a contradiction, just an oddity.

Perhaps these women are more likely to avoid birth control. There's any number of explanations for this.

Just like how rich people have fewer kids. But rich people don't die out.

[–]wotmate-1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Logic doesn't allow for an oddity like that.

There is another flaw in your hypothesis. Many studies have shown that successful women in business or government have high levels of testosterone, and lower levels of estrogen. Testosterone only makes one more aggressive, so without intelligence to go along with their aggressiveness, they would have never been successful. Logically then, there can be no link between estrogen and intelligence.

Sources? I don't believe you.
