Some of the more, uh, 'feminist'-y subreddits like r/2xc and r/creepypms will automatically ban users just for posting or commenting on certain subreddits (most notably r/t_d), even if you've never interacted with the community itself. The idea is, if you post on one of their blacklisted subs, you are not the kind of person they want on their subreddit.

Personally I think this kind of thing is deeply flawed, considering you'd be banned for posting on one of those subs to call a user out on their bullshit, or respectfully having a different viewpoint. They automatically infer that if you have any interaction with a subreddit they deem unacceptable, you're automatically banned.

However, I am actually a big fan of heavy moderation on subreddits like r/creepypms. As heavy-handed as they can be, without it that place would be a cesspool of victim blaming and guys making excuses for absolutely disgusting behavior. As it is, it functions pretty well as a support sub, which is its intention.

The cross-subreddit autobanning is over the top bullshit, though. Bubble/echo chamber is already a big problem on Reddit and auto-banning anybody you even suspect of having a contrary viewpoint from your own isn't doing anything to help that.

As usual, it's good intentions taken way too far.

I think it's a good intention to stamp out rampant misogyny in a subreddit catering towards women. Like in the case of r/creepypms I described above.

I think making a unilateral call on what subreddits are misogynous and banning anyone who has ever had any activity in them is fucking stupid and a massive overreaction to a minority of assholes.

Most of us aren't that bad. I get the same amount of schadenfreude from seeing women attempting a pussypass and getting shut down, as most women who see the same thing. Most men aren't misogynist assholes, and most women aren't reactionary quasi-feminist SJWs. But the vocal minority ruin things for the rest of us.

I met a guy from Reddit at a meetup who would go on r/2xc specifically just to start arguments with women. Like just pick up on any tiny thing someone wrote in a comment and turn it into an attack against them and women in general. He just wanted to take women down a few pegs, he was just that kind of douchebag. To be fair he'd do it with guys as well, but not with the same generalisations and intentional, targeted dickishness. He'd even boast about it, how he pushed particularly sensitive women into deleting their comments or even their entire accounts - that was a point of pride to him.

In my view, that kind of person deserves to be banned from that sub, not because he holds a contrasting viewpoint from the sub's target audience, but because he's just being a cunt for the sake of it. They're just trolls.

Maybe I didn't phrase it very well above, but the problem here is trying to automate a solution to a problem that can't be automated. It's a good intention to clean up a community of its worst trolls. Lazily banning anyone just because they interact with a certain community - and thus effectively mass silencing those likely to hold contrary viewpoints - is fucking stupid.

But their intention isn't to rid themselves of contrary viewpoints - which is exactly what r/t_d does, by the way. Their intention is to get rid of the worst trolls without needing to do each account manually (banning users on Reddit is an annoyingly convoluted process if you have to do it regularly).

At the same time, I realise that this isn't a particularly good place to voice this opinion...

He got booted from a sub he wasn't actively engaged in and brought it up here where he probably wouldn't get attacked over it. Not sure of many other subs where he could. He makes a dumb joke at the end as a response.
