You said yourself that you're fighting him. How can he feel alpha in social situations if he isn't even king of his own castle? Consider letting him dictate the social schedule got a while, while you work on fully supporting him. Make sure you're not putting him down in public, even saying something small like "oh, he didn't want to come, but look at how much fun he's having right now!" could make him feel uncomfortable and unhappy in that social situation. Focus on letting him lead, both at home and in social situations.
