tl;dr is at the bottom to avoid spoiling the lesson. This is a story I loosely recall from my youth, but is incredibly relevant to TRP strategy and life.
An old man was living in his cabin, and at night he couldn't stand the sound of the wind whistling in his window and the pitter patter outside when it rained. He couldn't stand the sound of the floor creaking and it was driving him mad. So he went to the village wise man and the village wise man told him to get a chicken. The old man thought "what the fuck?", but the wise man was wise and so the old man did as he was told. Later that night as he was trying to sleep the wind whistled, the water dripped, the floors creaked and now this fucking chicken was clucking and scratching. "Well fuck this shit" the old man though.
The next day he goes again to the wise man, and the wise man tells him to get a goat, and the old man goes "The fuck do I need a goat for", but the wise man was wise and the old man listened to him. That night the wind howled, the rain pitter patted, the chicken clucked and the goat bahhed. The old man continued this pattern until he had a house full of animals and the noise was unbearable. Pissed off he heads to the wise man.
"Why the fuck do I have these animals in my house for I can't hear myself think let alone get any sleep". The wise man was wise, and calmly looked at him and said "sell all of the animals." The old man was pissed but for the last time he did as he was told. He slept soundly that night, the relaxing breeze outside, the gentle pitter patter of the rain lulled him to sleep. Suddenly those sounds that were so loud were now barely noticed.
Lessons Learned:
If someone is wiser than you, shut the fuck up and listen.
Facing hardship is what makes you appreciate what you do have. At 19 I was homeless, I now own a small house and a couple cars. I don't live in a lap of luxury by any means, but when I wake up I'm grateful for the air conditioning I have, I'm grateful that I have a fridge full of food, I'm grateful that I have a place to sleep at night that I call my own. Plenty of people out there don't have that. Facing difficulty in life is what builds character, embrace it, learn from it, do not run from it. Being a man is about making the hard decisions and persevering through the bullshit. If you ever reach a point in your life where you have nothing, you learn to appreciate every little thing you have, but you also know in the back of your mind it can all be gone just as easily.
