Background: I started lifting back in August after a consultation with /u/GayLubeOil . I was 140 Lbs with minimal previous experience mostly related to curls. I have only bench pressed 135 at my max single rep back when I was in college. I'm also 33 years old.

Summary: My first competition in a strongman event.

Body:

A local crossfit gym which also has some strongman athletes hosted a competition this weekend and the events were sort of a cross between strongman and crossfit. The goal was to raise money for charity. I started lifting just 8 months ago and while I have a fair amount of body fat I am roughly 185 lbs now.

Although I didn't place well I managed to get no zeros and but up a very strong showing in the deadlift event. I managed to get 12 reps matching guys with much higher single rep PRs. Although I failed pretty badly at the Stone I still managed to get a single rep in to not get a zero after an exhausting day of competing.

I didn't finish last and I didn't zero any results which is a big plus in my book and a great boost to my strength training morale. While I'm not going to be winning any shows any time soon I was able to compete with some 20 years and still manage a respectable first show.

Today the day after the event I went out and put up a 140 log 10 inch log which is a new PR for me. Given that my strict press PR is only 145 this was a nice cherry on a hard weekend.

Although I feel like a bag of shit right now I can't help to grin at how far I have come in less than a year.

Lesson learned: It's never too late to get fit and achieve some goals.
