I have to agree, saw the samething happen with my kids...kids see things rather objectively....they can tell the difference between a peaceful and stable home and absolute shit

Those children may grow up disliking their father, but they eventually put the pieces together and Mom ends up getting the shaft for the rest of their adult lives while they renew their relationship with Dad
Nope. That is a fantasy, most people in the center of the Bell Curve are not intelligent enough to figure that out. My friend has a toxic mother. She even lied about him doing drugs to try to get him fired from his job at WalMart. Seriously. Why? Because he pissed her off in an argument. Then a week later his brother-in-law makes him mad and he's asking mommy what to do. Of course this is a family that just acts like total white trash shouting at the tops of their lungs at each other, past few months I've been finally distancing myself from this friend finally.

I have seen it happen, but it still is not as good as it could have been - the reunion is quite bittersweet, at least in the case I have seen up close and personal.

Nope, it's not a fantasy, I've seen it happen first hand, so I can assure you it's not. BUT probably not as common as I'd like to think in these cases.
