:-) Yah. My highly biased opinion, but I think the biggest thing that has changed in western society is the amount of war veterans. The other day I was going to make the comment "go talk to your father or grandfather that fought in WW1 or WW2". Then I realized none of you have a father who fought in WW2, and there are very few of you that have a grandfather who fought in WW2 who is still alive.

The biggest gains in rights always occured after major wars because veterans are hard to bully around. Also in the past it was common someone to serve one military contract for life experience and then to get out.

For obvious reasons the military has always wanted to recruit from rural areas. But modern western militaries especially USA is comprised of mainly rural people who will serve a full 20+ years. So now you have an extreme concentration of power. The American founders warned against a "professional army", because they knew their history and nasty things happen when you have a professional army.
