Scott Adams of Dilbert fame says he has a habit of going to the gym and that he rates himself on whether he does. Once he gets there he is not obligated to excercise. And true, about once a year or so he gets to the gym, looks around and thinks to himself: "I can't deal with this shit today". Then he is happy with himself for having strengthened the habit of going to the gym on the set time and goes home.

Building the right habits is the most effective way to change your future.

And some habits/skills are not about the task itself, but about the accompanying benefits, like the making the bed of your example. Reading fun novels for kids is another; practicing a valuable life skill and having positive associations with it is one of the most valuable habits I've developed without ever thinking about it.
