Became great friends with this WW2 veteran back in the 80's. He told me a story i think is relevant to this sub. Says he was looking for a wife when he got out of the army after the war. He was ready to pull the trigger on this lady he said looked better than Marilyn monroe. Well, the relationship progressed and he was shopping for a ring with the money he saved from the army. One day she said she needed tires for her car so she could drive to visit him.Rubber tires during wartime? right. People were driving on bologna skins because they were unavailable. Well, Old Al worked for Fairbanks morse. An engine company. He pulled some strings and got his Marilyn some new shoes for her car. Not long after,he said, he went to pick her up and her car was up on blocks. The coveted tires were gone. She told Al that she gave them to her brother. I know you know the ending of this little tale. Al launched her. "Thought she would squander my resources….." He married Betty instead. I was in my 20's when he told me that.Never forgot it. Thanks,Al.
