BPA?

I'm sure that's part of it but the reality is that it's a really complex situation. I do know there's "bad soy" that is basically almost pure estrogen.
remember those news reports about pain killers in your water? well I've heard that birth control pills also get in the water systems because the chemical can't be broken down by water. I can't confirm that but I really wouldn't be surprised.

Oh, yeah. Birth control drugs are mutating males in wild fish populations already.
I've been seeing commercials for a class action lawsuit against Risperdal, an ADHD medication, because it actually has been causing the boys who are put on it (so they can "fit in" with the feminized public school system) to grow breast tissue.

Is this a new phenomena? Anyone know?

I can definitely say I've never heard of this prior to 1990s at the very least. and guys this isn't just fat, this is full on mammary glands :S

When I was a kid, 20+ years ago, it happened to at least one guy I know who grew out of it. I think it's always happened, just not in these numbers. But I don't really know. Maybe other guys just hid it well.
It varies from country to country, I have been to some countries where I have never seen it and in the U.S I have seen a lot of young kids with it. I would say it happened in the U.S longer ago because of the rise of highly processed foods and what not. I highly doubt it was around in the 50s.
But I am in no way an expert, just an observer here.

It's always been around. Genetic diversity/mutation will always result in varying hormone levels, with them sometimes far off enough to cause gynecomastia. The increased rates seen today, however, are likely a result of a changing diet, lifestyle, and chemical/hormone exposure.
edit: according to A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia, other causes can include:
Aging Cancer chemotherapy Chronic liver disease Exposure to anabolic steroid hormones Exposure to estrogen hormone Kidney failure and dialysis Lack (deficiency) of testosterone (male hormone) Marijuana use Hormone treatment for prostate cancer Radiation treatment of the testicles Side effects of some medications (ketoconazole, spironolactone, metronidazole, cimetidine (Tagamet))

Who knew castrating men would have an affect?

Denmark's so feminist PC, they probably think this is a great thing.
"Yay, our sexes are converging into androgynous beings! Now those evil men will know how terrible and hard it is for us women because we have tits".

This always happened, even in the 50s. When I hit puberty in the beginning of the 2000s I had mild case (they were more sensible than anything). My father told me that he had them too when he was young and it's normal, had friends who had them briefly.
My guess is that puberty kickstarts testosterone but also increases estrogen and the body is trying to adjust to this, every organ have it's own time to adapt, that's why some people have pubic hair first and others have testicle enlargement first.
Don't know about statistics but my guess is that no one ever cared to make a study until now and were amazed about the results.
