Summary: Respect for and to others is a valid need. Go beyond your self. Learn to show(and take) respect. Don't just learn to step away.
Body:
I would like to share a small story that I read from Osho:
Once a man died and as he stood at the gates, he was asked to choose between heaven and hell. To get a better sense, he asked to get a tour of the two places and was taken to hell to start with. There he found that everyone had been handicapped at their elbows such that they could not help themselves. Due to this they were unable to feed themselves and were in a state of hunger, weakness and despair.
When he was taken to heaven, to his surprise he found that the people there had the same handicap as the people in hell. However, what he saw was a state of health and happiness. The difference he saw was the although through their handicap the people weren't able to help themselves, they were able to help others in feeding them. So people paired to help each other and get past their handicap.
There is a subtle concept I am trying to outline through this story. The actual narrative does not mean anything if you miss that.
We can believe in the idea that Esteem can be born from the self alone. That we make our own happiness.
In truth, we "need" respect from others as well as the chance to "respect others". In this I don't mean fake respect.
I mean respect born out of the understanding of the context that we live in.
The kind of respect that catches your bull shit, appreciates you for your decisions and "Is there" to support you in real terms.
The Exercise/Lessons Learned/Conclusion:
Look around you. Just look with that focus to find what you're looking for in the world.
And when you do find that, take that step of courage to stand up, move forward and appreciate them (in clear terms). If you are in a position of power, use it to demonstrate your values. Take a position of legal dominance with Machiavellian/Operant conditioning to dominate those who don't see the truth as it is.
A man who sees action in inaction and inaction in action has understanding among men and discipline in all action he performs - The Bhagavad Gita
tldr; respect from and for others is a valid need.
