The other day I happened upon an article about the question of if whether or not magazine companies should be held liable for the "emotional impact" on women who are "subjected to their impossible standards." This made me begin to remember all of the times I've heard that argument; the impossible struggle of the modern day female to live up to societies physical expectations. It is actually a pretty commonly talked about issue, I myself have heard several women discuss this in real time. They often follow such comments up with "I wish I was a man, they don't get judged" or "Guy's have such an easier standard to live up to." If you think about it; that's a fucking lie.
I want to lay this out with some simple comparisons here about men and women and how we're all judged physically.
First off on facial aesthetics: Men look exactly as they do right now, as they do all the time. I look the same when I wake up in the morning, as I do when I go out at night, and as I do when I'm going to sleep. Now I'm more than happy with myself, but if I weren't, there is nothing I can do to change anything.
Women on the other hand, get cosmetics. No women that you know looks the same going out as they do waking up or going to bed at night. If you see a photo comparison of even super models with and without make up (there are many), they all easily drop 1-2 points on the hotness scale. With makeup you can can cover up most flaws with your skin, and take focus away from any physical facial flaws, and even bring focus to your better facial qualities.
Now I'm not at all saying men should start using make up, just that both men and women get judged on their faces and facial features, but only women get to completely alter theirs.
Who has it harder here? Men.
Next on the list would be the ideal body:
For women it's pretty straight forward. The most popular body type is without doubt thin, with a nice chest. If you're overweight, all you need to do is diet, and if you have a small chest, there is an extremely common and safe plastic surgery that can change that.
For men its a bit different. For men the most popular body type is thin, muscular, and tall. Your height, you can't change; and if you're under 5'10, (if we're talking the ideal) it's probably going to impact peoples judgement of you. As for the thin and muscular, yeah, for men it's not only just a good diet. It's also years of daily hard work in the gym.
Yeah, both genders are definitely judged highly these days in regards to their physiques. But men not only need to worry about being lean, but also building/maintaining a serious muscle. As well as (if we're comparing the importance of breast size with females, and height for men; which i think is actually pretty accurate) men can't change their height, and women can change their breast size with a simple surgery.
Who has it harder here? Men
Realistically, if you take a photo out of a magazine of a female model, and of a male fitness model, the man has to put the most work in as maintenance; and if you factor in height, and the lack of distracting make up and clothing choice (heels, etc), the man also has to be more genetically gifted to get where he is.
The fact that so many women complain and say they wish they could be men so things would be easier really have no idea; I think most would be shocked by the amount that there.
