"Moral Panics" are a recurring phenomenon. From the "witch hunts" of the past, to the Satanism and Child Abuse in the 1980s - see the "McMartin Pre-School" case, sparked by the schizo, alcoholic mother of one of the children. The statements of the kids were widely at odds with reality - witches flying, one of the workers levitating, underground 'torture' rooms, etc., - yet several members of the McMartin family were imprisoned and one, son-in-law Ray Buckley, was held in prison for 5 years without ever having been convicted of a crime.

Worse, the "West Memphis Three" spent 18 years in prison for murdering three children as part of some "Satanic cult ritual" - don't get spotted being a goth and reading a Stephen King novel in Arkansas - and were ultimately only released under an "Alford" plea, whereby they can maintain their innocence but acknowledge that the prosecutors have enough evidence to convict them - there is evidence that at least one of the three felt pressured to agree because one of his co-defendants was under a death sentence. Even one of the parents of the murdered children calls the release of the defendants without exonerating them an outrage: "They're innocent. They did not kill my son."

Of course, the real - and cynical -reason behind permitting Alford pleas in this case is because the state new it was going to lose a then-upcoming appeal for new trials, it wasn't going to get convictions, and that the men would be entitled for compensation for 18 years of wrongful imprisonment.

So now, we're in the midst of a "rape hysteria", which is how the Duke Lacrosse case happened, and "Mattress Girl", and the more recent UVa False Rape case - once the case fell apart, the C-ville police had to keep it open and pretend there was an open rape case to avoid negative publicity.

We hear ominous statistics like "1 in 5" or "1 in 4" (because 1 in 5 evidently wasn't "bad enough") when FBI Crime Statistics chow that the real number is "6 in 10,000", and that co-eds are actually safer than women in the general population. Never mind that if it was 1 in 5, there would BE no co-eds because parents would not allow their daughters to go to college, what with all the roving "rape vans" and "rape parties" going on.

And instead of "Salem" we have Title IX tribunals where the Witchfinder Generals determine whether drunk sex, regretted 6 weeks later when the girl "changes her mind" (rape, after the fact, evidently), gets put up to "pressing charges" because "The Sisterhood!", etc.

The next thing will be us older dudes who date young women will suddenly become "human traffickers", at least in the Anglosphere....
