Example: This should be fun because my gf probably knows my reddit handle. I went through a major career change this year. I worked at a small company, turned my boss (also my father) in for embezzlement, and sat unemployed for 5 months before landing a corporate job at a Fortune 500 company. I more than doubled my AGI. Unfortunately the office was more than an hour from my apt. So I moved to be closer to work because 10 hours of commute from the city every week would destroy my chances of killing it at this new company.

Gf of course bitched and complained about the small town I as moving to and insisted that I keep two apartments, one in the city and one near work. She has been unemployed and basically crashing at my city apt for 6 months. I suggested that she find an apt in the city and that I would stay w her on the weekends. She eventually persuaded me to commit to assisting with the rent of the proposed city apt.

In the weeks leading up to my departure she started searching for apartments on Craigslist for a city apartment. To my utter dismay she was singling out apartments that were twice as expensive as a) the city apt I then rented and b) the town apt I was planning on renting. I asked why she felt she could afford such a place and here's the explanation I got.

Have you seen what apartments in the range you're suggesting look like? They're awful. They're in bad neighborhoods. I would be afraid to walk home at night. The interiors are impoverished and one could get sick from the mold.

I suggested that in order to live in the nicer areas she should try getting a roommate. Of course that wouldn't be possible because women get along too well and they might end up becoming best friends... This is what happened for me over the past three years. I lived in an apt with three rooms and made friends over and over again, male and female. I am actually going to miss that setup. Women on the other hand, rarely survive the roommate scenario unless it is with a guy or there's a family connection that pressures there respectful behavior.

I then asked her to join me in my search for an apt in the small town I moved to. She was not surprised that I had singled out small inexpensive apartments and in fact encouraged me to take one that was very affordable, well below 25% of my income.

She still has hopes of getting an apartment in the city. I told her to get a job before I'd seriously consider assisting with the rent. She almost instantly landed an interview with a Fortune 200 company two weeks after I moved out and started my new job. What the hell was she doing for the past 8 months? I heard all these sob stories of how hard it was to get a job in this city, especially for an attractive female because all bosses were sleazy men. These sleazy men also had a hard time dealing with her superior intelligence particularly if they couldn't fuck her.

Omg, I just posted my way out of this relationship...god dammit, two years down the drain, time to man up. I apologize for any grammar errors in advance. It's 5am and I'm going for a run before work...thanks TRP for the impetus to deal with life like a man. There may even be some credit due for the job change.
