Here's what I've found in regards to social proof at school. I once heard the phrase 'too cool for the nerds, too nerdy for the cool kids.' That's basically me, since I'm in an awkward middle ground. Whenever I hang out with my more nerdy friends, I'm the AMOG. When I hang out with guys that are more Alpha/have high social proof (like football, soccer, basketball, and baseball players), I'm basically the beta of the group, because I don't have as much social proof as them.
My nerdy group: By nerdy, keep in mind I don't mean the greasy-haired acne riddled kids with no social skills. What I really mean is average, usually scrawny kids with average looks. They do a lot of stuff that doesn't have as much social proof (robotics, debate, science bowl), and if they play sports it's usually cross country or tennis. Among them, I'm the de facto AMOG. Why? Two reasons: 1) I do all the activities they do- debate, robotics, science bowl- and I'm the best at them. I've been to state and nationals, which makes them respect me and 2) I'm bigger than they are, since I lift, lol.
The popular alpha group: As I've said, basically the stereotypical preppy popular group: rich, good-looking, play sports. I'm sort of in their group, in that they invite me to shit. I'm pretty good-looking and have good social skills, so I hang out with them sometimes. But the thing is that I'm one of the lower-teir popular kids, so to speak. All the popular guys have more social-proof than I do because of something.
Being in the 'alpha group' should boost my social proof, but will it take a blow over being the most 'beta' of them? Do I even get social proof from being the AMOG of a less popular group?
