On a bit of a mission as we all are in terms of getting my fitness, academics, and finances up as we all are. Having just turned 21 its proved to be real difficult to do when all of my friends activities consist of drinking huge amounts or drugs of some sort. Trying to shed this group of friends but I'm afraid I'm going to do more harm to myself than good is it worth cutting off social contact with your friend group just to work on yourself? I'm not trying to go monk mode, I'd love to make new friends who are more beneficial to me and my goals and hang out with them or whatever but it's proving quite difficult. And another point to add would be that I'm not even sure that this group were my friends to begin with and rather just a group of people that tolerated me which is often how it felt. I would always be having to get in touch to hang out with them and never the other way around. I haven't reached out to any of them in 2 months and haven't heard a peep and its just fucked with my self-esteem in a way.

I'm putting this here instead of askreddit in the aims of consistency as this is the community I've been getting most all of my advice from.

  1. Should I ditch my old group of friends when I don't see any real benefit in continuing the relationships?
  2. Would it be easy enough to make new friends?

To be honest when I look at the pros and cons it's clear that this is a toxic group and I'm better off without them I'm just worried Ill end up a loner which is a worst case.

Any input is appreciated.
