He's being passive aggressive. Whenever he's acting like that, immediately call him out on it. Make him understand that you won't tolerate his shit. If you know how to threaten; then threaten him subtly. However, I won't advise this if you've never threatened anyone before. It's more of an art.
Personally, I'd wait for him to take a bathroom break, then follow him quietly. Before he has started his business, I'll confront him and talk to him straight. If there are issues, he'll have to clearly specify them. Any attempt at dodging the issue or feigning friendliness, and I'll threaten him, straight up. It could be something along the lines of "If you ever try to go behind my back again, I'll fuck you like a pig" It helps if you have a friendly demeanor because that'll make it even more scary and will also help you feign innocence if the subject comes up to a third party.
Even after doing all this, he refuses to understand, then get ready to make life hell for him. Machiavelli said "There's no avoiding war; it can only be postponed to the benefit of your enemies" So, don't try to patch things up or make peace. Warn him fair and square, and if he doesn't listen, then go after him with everything.
Remember: If you want peace, you must prepare for war.
