Recently, I suggested to a group of friends that we hang out. One of the girls in the group suggested something that I (and everyone else) really had no interest in doing. Having read all about being assertive and taking a leadership role in a social situation all over TRP, I saw an opportunity to take the initiative. I basically told her that her idea was stupid, and then told everyone that we would be going to a concert instead. The immediate reaction was very positive (even from her), but the natural follow up question was "which concert?" I feel that if I ask everyone what they want, my assertiveness loses its edge, but if I don't bother asking, then my idea gets shot down or everyone goes to the concert and hates it. How do the experts out there balance assertiveness and making sure everyone has a good time?
