It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

You can't just stop by fighting the urge or deleting accounts, not even that nosurf bullshit about mind training and bedroom energy can save you. Your only escape is to actually have better shit to do, a side project, a sport, a girl to fuck... it could be anything. Also, at the end of the day you should be exhausted enough that the only thing you wanna do is to close your eyes and sleep. Leave lurking for when you're eating, shitting, commuting or at work if it's possible.

Reddit: Unsubscribe from all unnecessary/entertainment subs. Leave only those that are beneficial. No news either. You want news, you go to a news site, not Reddit.

Facebook: Don't use it at all but I've heard that this Chrome extension helps.

YouTube: Recommendations are what caused me to watch unnecessary shit and waste time. There is no option to get rid of recommendations. So this is what I did:-

  • Turn off search and watch history: YouTube uses this to find related videos.

  • Then I changed my country on the site to Japan. Nothing I search, watch or could be interested in is in Japanese.

Result: no recommendations. Occasionally I'll get some music recommendations or sth, you'll need to cross it thrice most likely for it not to appear again, YouTube tries thrice.

Snapchat: You can keep friends but hide their stories. In case you find yourself constantly checking.

The best solution however, is to actually do something better with your time, so you internalise how much of your time each activity is worth.

Yes. The only place I bother with is here and if I'm here it's usually because I'm stuck on a conference call or something else that sticks me front of a screen. IF you are here because you are bored, turn your computer off an go outside.

Right now I'm listening to a bunch of Indians bitch about how they aren't getting paid enough. Fuck off.

You have to fight the first week urge of "let me just scroll through fb/reddit for a while". It's like a conditioned response when you're bored, a literal addiction. Ever find yourself whipping your phone out with no purpose when in a queue or bored, well that's your addiction.

Like a drug addict, willpower is not enough to ween you off at first, what you need to do is eliminate the source and have no access for the first few weeks, then that "lets quickly check fb" conditioning is eroded.

There are plenty of apps that block websites on chrome and such, but my problem was always my smartphone. The Freedom app on ios and my computer is what I use.

People will tell you to delete your accounts. I found that to be almost impossible. Since I am on my computer quite often but not all the time, I delete facebook, instagram and snapchat apps from my cellphone, and now can only access them from my computer - it's worked wonders for me so far.

Lol so many answers here buying into the frame of "I want to do it but I don't want to develop the discipline". Switch your phone off. Delete the app. Whatever. Just actually do it if you so desire.

Out of the websites you mentioned, Reddit is probably the most productive. As such, you can get away with limiting your Reddit usage to the subreddits you find productive. As for the other websites, I can only give my input on Facebook because prior to deleting my account, I wasn't using much else outside of it.

Note that deleting it is a radical measure, there's still some undeniable value in owning a Facebook account. For me, the negatives exceeded the positives, so I had to go nuclear. I found the act of having an account and constantly resisting its temptations for the sake of the benefits it provides to more mentally draining that opting out entirely. You can request complete deletion (>implying) from Facebook so that there's no going back, but I personally didn't do that as I intend to go back.

After deleting it, a period of detoxing follows. You might experience withdrawals that'll tempt you to open another account, but you have to push past them. For me, it lasted close to a month, but realistically, it depends on what else you have going on in your life in the meantime. Once that bridge is crossed, you become free from its hold. You now have more free time on your hands, be sure to invest it in productive endeavors otherwise you would just have replaced one addiction with another.

If Facebook was your main method of communication, then you'll have to replace it with an alternative, whichever is most popular among your social circle. Someone told me you could still use Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account, but don't quote me on it.

You're asking something you already know how to do. Are you gonna do it or no? People should not lose time giving tips so someone who's not really gonna do anything.
