Nicollo states that a virtues statesmen can act in accordance with morals but it's a luxury, whenever possible he should instead take timely and decisive actions which yield the desired result, and above all to not let his actions be governed by fear of judgement or consequences. (Because he stands above it)

He goes in great detail how the murder of a rival was the only correct and virtues action (in the context and politic and situation of the time. Also, don't confuse classical/greed-roman "virtu" with Christian virtues) .

As to how to be more machivellian:

First one needs to be virtuous. That is, realise what manliness means, and how fortunate favors the bold. (You must take what you want, create your own opportunities , no one will give you anything in life)

This corresponds to several TRP maxims:

you are the prize ( leadership, manliness, fortuna)
be outcome Independant (flexible
discovering what is Reality, and what are smoke screens to pacify and control the population.)

Be selfish, an asshole who looks after number one, but play along with people when it is I your interest.

Let people flatter you, but don't get caught up in praise, the only praise you value is when you say you did a good job of something.

Know what people want, as a person of value and means, people reach out to you because they want something. It isn't a coincidence you're getting that phone call. Know what people want and what you provide of value to them and make sure you get something in return.

If you're going to read Mirrors, get the Yale press publication with commentary. Raw it is a but inaccessible unless you're knowledgeable in Italian Period politics.

"Virtu" is the encompassing term. It encapsulates what classicals considered 'manliness', before it was re-defined to downplay the aggressive parts in favor of 'being a good citizen'/provider/husband (and now, the nu-male, metrosexual)

Basically, imagine you're a roman citizen, you're part of the greatest civilization of the known world. But you're surrounded by barbarians, and life is though. Being a man meant, being hard, surviving and thriving, protecting your family and way of life and building a civilization. It requires a practical approach to life, that isn't politically correct by today's standards.

Then during the renaissance, all of this is looked at through a romantic lens, which doesn't conform with the reality. Politicians and rulers are following a set of dogmatic moral rules, that restrict them and that doesn't get them the results you would expect (hello blue pill, you take many guises.) Example given of some prominent 'nice guy' ruler falling under the axe of a more ruthless 'asshole bad boy' ruler (vast simplification and analogy for my own amusement)

Nicolo, having had classical training and having write several well regarded treaties on roman and italian history, set out to analyse these decisions and their consequences in a book intended for a would-be patron, which was meant to guarantee him an advisory position of power. Things worked out differently, he died in exile, disgraced and destitute.

So in a way, Nicolo was a Red Pill man of his age:

he analysed what worked and what didn't, instead of following general beliefs of how things 'should' work.
espoused immoral practices for which he was ostracized by the public for his methods.
core tenet: return to the 'manliness' that built civilizations; be your own man, and seize any and all opportunities to reach your intended goals.

I have a copy with my own annotations, I open it once a year to remind myself which lessons I have and could have applied to the events of the year. I find it remarcably 'current', unlike Sun Tzu, which is more about battle strategy and tactics unless you generalize to the extreme.
