In Casino, DeNiro was the BB. The drugged up ex was the bad boy alpha from her past.

DeNiro may have been higher status on the surface, but he didn't give her the tingles.

Edit: Point being, you are mistaken. To her, DeNiro is the lesser man.

The woman is securing a provider with the lower status man, she doesn't give a fuck about him. Passed drugs and probably a place to stay, she's just biding time while she hunts for a man of higher status.

Reason she returns to the lower status man is that she can't secure a man like DeNiro, his options are endless, she tries and fails to secure him, then runs back to the provider.

Hopefully that explains what's going on here.
