Have some life experiences that are applicable to the job at hand, use those talking points during the interview. Appearance is everything, get a haircut, show up in a suit, have a proofread resume and print it on good paper.

Problem: most, if not all, big chain stores require an online application. Apply online first, then go in and talk to manager. Personally hand him/her a resume and say something like "I didn't want to be another name in the system."

Even then it may not matter. Big stores have HR departments staffed by cunts and the manager sometimes has no say in who gets hired. So if you get rejected, don't take it personal. It's an employer's market when it comes to unskilled labor.

First attempt at JC Penny, I talked to a manager and asked if he had any job openings and he said he had one. He took my resume and said "wow you have quite the military experience," all I said was yeah haha. And then he asked how was the move (I assumed he meant from out the military to here) and I said it was rough at first but it's working. He smiled the entire time but I don't think I did. I wasn't as happy go lucky idk why. Then he shook my hand and said "I will see what I can do for you." Is that bad?
