[Long post ahead]
It seems recently that I've been hearing a lot of this. Got a job in sales a couple of months ago and I've been doing well so far. However the place itself is in a not so great part of town which I need to work at before we open a store in a better area which I will then move to.
My shop sells medical supplies and we'll sell to pretty much anyone who can prove medical basis for their need (prove is a loose term here). For the most part my dealings with customers have been great except for the occasional difficult one.
For example I had a guy come in the other day who was older and was trying to buy something. This guy came in and could barely speak English. I helped him find what he was looking for and got him to the checkout counter. However he didn't have the necessary proof and couldn't buy what he came to buy. I tried helping him out as best as I could (seeing if he had a contact he could call, if he had a picture of his proof as he said it was at home - basically if there was any basis at all). The guy had nothing and I guess my frustration must have showed because after the sale, my manager pulled me aside and said that I did the right thing following procedure but I was a little too aggressive with him.
Similarly, this past weekend my roommate was invited to his friends cabin up north, and invited myself and some other friends to join. After we had all come back and he saw the mom again, he told me that she really liked me. He said that at first she thought I was a little stand-offish, but that I was polite and a really nice guy and that she would love to have me over again.
Also I was talking to my girlfriend about this and she said that I have a very dominant personality and that "people would move out of the way if I was walking down the street."
These three instances have me feeling that I'm coming across as too direct or dominant, and it's something that I think I should tone down, or work to better incorporate into my interactions in order to further my sales career. I'm just not sure how to do it, as this is how I've been pretty much my whole life. Even before TRP, I had always had this assertiveness and the pill helped me channel it. Now I need help making it more digestible to other people. Any suggestions?
