I have no idea what he was thinking. When the chick graduated making even more money than him I believe, she dumped his ass and left.

But, drilled down, the book breaks down nice guy behavior into the fact that he's not doing shit to be nice or because he wants to do it, he's doing shit because he thinks it'll net a return of some sort, which is called a covert contract.

Like if you allow a visiting crush to stay at your place for a few days. If you do it sneaky and behind the scenes then you've created a contract in your head, but you haven't let the other party know there's an expected "quid pro quo" because you expect to get laid in return, then you're a "nice guy", which is pretty reprehensible.

"I let you stay here, so you need to let me fuck you."

Being "nice" with the expectation of getting something in return is actually the opposite of "being nice".

And the failures of these covert contracts are why there are frustrated beta nice guys crying themselves to sleep everywhere.

It's not what they do, it's why.

Nice guys do things expecting a return. This is different than doing something as an exchange. For example, I had a neighbor ask me to carry her TV in for her once. I told her to bake me cookies. She did. My time is valuable.

A nice guy would have carried the TV in and then silently expected a reward for doing so.

Nice guys act nice, not out of generosity, but out of an attempt to "bribe" someone to give them what they want.

Last Saturday I gave an elderly woman a lift home when her car wouldn't start. Nothing in it for me and I didn't expect there to be. I did it because a human needed help and I was in a position to give it. I was not influenced by anything other than my own moral code.

"Being" a nice guy to a girl who hasn't done a goddamn thing to deserve it, except being born with a vagina.
